Silver and Soft Bareroot Air Plant (Tillandsia harrisii)

Tillandsia harrisii is a soft leaved air plant native to Guatemala growing in altitudes of sea level to around 1600 feet above. Great for beginners, this plant has plenty of trichomes that allow it to stay hydrated with very little maintenance. Considered a caulescent species (meaning growing along a stem), the Harrisii has plenty of green-toned leaves growing in a rosette shape along the stem.

The Harrisii was named after Tillandsia enthusiast Bill Harris who was tragically killed in Guatemala in 1985 and was further described by Renate Ehlers in 1987. It is a very distinct plant that may grow up to 8quot; long leaves and have a medium to thick stem up to 14quot; long. The leaves will grow inward and have a curled form like that of a rosette. This plat can survive high sunlight exposure, but would need lots of water. When in bloom, the Harrisii will produce a 5-6quot; red inflorescence with up to 10 blue-violet to violet flowers. Considered somewhat slow-growing.

Foliage:
Soft leaf, green to yellow-green with grey tones from the ample trichomes present, growing in rosette shape along the stem.


Blooms:
Red inflorescence with purple flowers. Floral bracts are usually crimson and smooth. Flowers are tubular in shape with no fragrance.

No

Environment:
Medium to high humidity. It will usually tolerate indoor levels without difficulty, but would appreciate a more humid environment. Grows best in 50-80 degrees F and will tolerate as low as 30 degrees for a very short period of time. Needs good air circulation.


Light:
Bright indirect to filtered, direct light. Try to avoid North-facing windows due to lack of sufficient lighting.


Water:
Submerge plant 1 hour upon receiving, then every week thereafter for 1-2 hours or thoroughly mist 4-7x per week. Decrease watering if the humidity levels are higher. Gently shake the plant to dislodge water then place upside-down on absorbent material until the leaves are thoroughly dry. Soggy leaves or overly damp crown/base may encourage leaf drop and disease. Decrease water in winter.


Fertilizer:
Use a balanced fertilizer every month during the growing period. It is advisable to use a epiphyte fertilizer mix or a general-purpose fertilizer diluted to 1/4 of the directions.

This plant is not considered toxic, but should not be consumed. Plants are shipped with light wrapping and padding according to import/export regulations. Shipping usually occurs on Monday and Tuesday to minimize risk of damage to plants in transit.
